Sleeping Chestnut Baby

Sleeping Chestnut Baby, 2021, hand sculpted stoneware clays, white underglaze, custom glazes, reduction fired in gas kiln, nest made of found natural materials.

Hand-sculpted chestnut baby in found material nest, seeking to be a representation of the artist's journey of migration. The chestnut is a culturally significant plant/ food and is considered an 'exotic export' of Hungary.

Therefore, the artist having moved from Hungary to Australia as a young child embodies those original characteristics of the sweet chestnut that is native to Hungary, but having been shipped/moved and expected to assimilate, has started to take on a life of its own.

New growth in the form of baby teeth and a sprouty head sprouts have made it too different to fit in with the chestnut community, and still not similar enough to the plants native to Australia to qualify as one of them.

/Nest included in purchase.
